Invigilation Opportunities

Mario Magnanni Brown Magnanni BlackMid BlackMid Magnanni Brown BlackMid Mario Brown Mario BlackMid Magnanni Mario UCL engages invigilators to support the examination process throughout the year.  The main examination period takes place each year in April/May and June, with a resit exam period in August/September.  We are looking for people who can demonstrate common sense, accuracy and attention to detail and strive to ensure the best possible examination experience for our students.

You must be punctual, reliable and have a flexible attitude to work and possess good communication skills.  Duties include laying out stationery, observation, checking attendance, collecting scripts and liaising with candidates, academics and examinations staff to resolve queries.

UCL operates up to 30 examination halls spread across London of which you may be allocated to any one of these venues.  Invigilators assigned for full day or morning only duties must be ready to begin invigilating at the appropriate venue by 09:00am.  Those assigned to afternoon only duties must be in post by 13.30.

Rate of pay & hours of work

The rate of pay during the examination periods will normally be per session (morning or afternoon) or for the whole day.  The rate of pay is £58.85 (plus £7.76 holiday pay) per session or £78.11 (plus £10.31 holiday pay) for the whole day.

UCL examinations vary in length from 1 hour to 3.5 hours, so finishing times will vary accordingly.  Invigilators will be required to remain on duty until all scripts have been collected and the Supervisor gives permission to leave.

Invigilators engaged for full day duties will have lunchtime breaks, the times for which will be arranged by the hall supervisor.  All invigilators will be permitted a 20 minute break during the morning and afternoon sessions, the times for which will also be arranged by the hall supervisor.

Fees for duties undertaken are paid directly into your bank account by UCL Payroll.  Please note that invigilation engagements are subject to PAYE and National Insurance deductions in line with HMRC rules and limits.  Research students can complete a form P46 to claim exemption from tax.

Examinations Manager, UCL Student and Registry Services, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, the envelope should be marked  ‘STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL – INVIGILATOR APPLICATION’.  

Although applications will be accepted all year round we will contact applicants for a shortlisting process in January 2018 for the exams for 2018.

Short-listed applicants will be invited to attend a selection process which will involve a presentation being given followed by a short quiz and some group work.  All applicants will receive written confirmation of the outcome of their application.  Please note that all communication from UCL will be via email to the email address that you stipulate on your application form.

Due to the nature of the work involved, students currently registered on taught postgraduate or undergraduate programmes at UCL or other institutions are not eligible to apply.
